Last night I arrived barely on time for a function. At the same time, the three other people I was supposed to meet also arrived – barely on time. We were immediately in "task mode" – making decisions, setting up the mastery class, checking to see if we brought all the things we said we would. Heads down, elbows flying. Each of us checking and re-checking everything. Doing, doing, doing.
Then Richard Swartz said, "Hey, I didn't get my hug!" Then there was a chorus of, "Hey, I didn't either!" So all four of us stopped and hugged one another. Sounds schmaltzy, but we are all good friends. There was an immediate difference in the energy amongst us, as well as in the room itself. Now we were connected in a very different way than before … more ease, more fun, more lightness of being. And we still got the task done … in time!
I know this is how it works best – connect with the 'being,' THEN connect with the 'doing.' It even works best with mySelf – connecting with my purpose – then with that intention in place, my 'doing' seems to be more graceful.
Last night I forgot. It's easy to do when there are so many tasks to get done. And they are all tasks I want to do. However, I don't want to sacrifice Being for "getting the job done." I want to begin with my own being, then connect with the other beings. When that's in place, my experience is that the Doing is elevated to a higher degree of accomplishment.
Do do do – high productivity, high burn-out
Be be be – low burn-out, low productivity
Do be do be do – now that's a dance! Sing it, Frankie!
